Project Overview
The completed Hall Street Pier Replacement project is a major marine infrastructure upgrade located on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake in Nelson, BC. The project involved the deconstruction of the existing wooden pier and the construction of a new, enlarged facility supported by open-end steel pipe piles. Features include an extensive structural steel and wood timber framework, floating docks, a striking glulam wood exterior canopy, a unique swimming enclosure, and a dedicated glass pavilion housing the historic, record-setting Ladybird speedboat. Designed by Stanley Office of Architecture (SOA) and MBAC, the pier serves as a welcoming four-season gateway connecting historic downtown Baker Street directly to the waterfront.
Construction & Recognition
North Mountain Construction managed the overall execution, budget coordination, and site logistics for the project. In addition to overseeing specialized subcontractors for major phases, NMC utilized its own forces to complete the structural concrete formwork, supply 85% of the framing labour, and manage ongoing site facilities and security. Leveraging Nelson’s culture of wood manufacturing, the hybrid wood and steel canopy was expertly crafted to create strategic views and dynamic interplays of light and shadow. The project has received widespread acclaim for its architectural merit and community impact, earning a 2023 Canadian Architect Award of Excellence, a 2025 AZ Award for Urban Design Interventions, and a 2025 IES Illumination Award of Merit.
